2、venofinancialinterestinthesubjectmatterofthisposter.TreatmentofKeratoconusUsingRiboflavin-InducedCornealCollagenCrosslinkingKeratoconusisabilateraldiseaseofcornealcollagenfibersthatleadstothinningofthecorneaandprotrusionoftheanteriorportionofthecornea.Thediseaseaffectsap
3、proximatelyonein2000peopleofallgendersandethnicgroups.Thethinningandprotrusionofthecorneacanleadtotearsinthecorneaandacutehydrops,wherethereissuddencornealedemaandeventualscarringandlossofvision.Evenwithoutthiscomplication,patientswithkeratoconusoftenhavedecreasedvisiond
4、uetoabnormallyhighamountsofastigmatism,orirregularlyshapedcorneas.Approximately20%ofpeopleaffectedbykeratoconuswillrequireatleastonecornealtransplantduringtheirlifetime.Theaimofourtreatmentistostrengthenthecorneasbycross-linkingthecollagenviaapplicationofriboflavinandsti
5、mulationbyUVlightsothattheydonotslowlyweaken,reducevision,causescarring,andpossiblyrequirecornealtransplantation.Theexpectationisthattreatmentwillslowtheprogressionofthediseaseandavoidtheneedforacornealtransplant.ThetreatmenthasbeenperformedinEuropeforthepastdecadewithre
6、markablyfavorableresults(seeTable1andreferences).IntroductionTheCaporossi-Baiocchi-Mazzotta(CBM)VEGAX-linkerwasdevelopedbyAldoCaporossi,CosimoMazzotta,andStefanoBaiocchiincollaboratioinwiththeItalianfirmC.S.O.TheCBMX-linkerisadevicethatemitsultraviolet(UV)radiationat370n
7、m(peakabsorptionofriboflavin)(figure1).Thedeviceisdesignedtoproduceatimely,homogeneousdoseofirradiationanddeliverittoa9mmdiameterspotsizeatadistanceofbetween1.5and1.8cm.Thisworkingdistanceallowsformoreefficientfocusingonthecornea.Asmalldigitalvideocameraisincludedinthece
8、nteroftheUV-Aarrayinordertomonitortheaiming-beamalignmentandtocontrolthecentrationoftheirradiatedarea.T
