2、mersandimmigrantstookjobsindustyfoundries,millsandmines,exposurestosilicasignificantlyincreasedandconsequentlysodidthedisease’sprevalence.TheHistoryofSilicosisStudiesinthe1910’sshowedhighratesofsilicosisamongtheleadandzincminersofOklahoma,KansasandMissouriwhererocksandor

3、eshavebeenknowntoconsistofmorethan95%ofsilica.Onestudyin1915showedthatmorethanhalfofthe700zincminerssampledhadsilicosis.TheHistoryofSilicosisDuringthe1930’soutrageoversilicosisheightenedwiththeadventoftheHawk’sNestincident,whichhasbeencalled“America’sworstindustrialdisas

4、ter”.DuringahydroelectricprojectthroughaWestVirginiamountain,workerswhowerenotprovidedanyrespiratoryprotectionwereexposedtoveryhighcontentsofsilica.Althoughitwascurrentknowledgethattheexposuretodustcontainingsilicawasknowntobepotentiallyfatal,sponsors’oftheprojectdidnoth

5、ing.Estimatesofthenumberofdeathsassociatedwiththisexposurerangefrom66toaresearcher’sstudycountofmorethan700.TheHistoryofSilicosisSoonaftertheHawk’sNestincident,thenSecretaryofLabor,FrancesPerkinsdeclaredwaronsilicosisafteranationalconferencesin1936and1940afilmentitled“St

6、opSilicosis”wasissuedtohelpelevatethenationalagendaandpromotetheneedtopreventsilicosis.TheHistoryofSilicosisAlmost30yearslaterinresponsetothegrowingconcernregardingworkers’safety,severalnewfederallawswerepassedinthelate1960’sandearly1970’sadoptingrulesthatlimitedtheexpos
