3、.Thisstudy,incontrast,usesaqualitativegroundedtheoryapproachtodevelopthebasisforanalternativetheoreticalperspective:thatofcompetence.Acompetenceapproachtounderstandingsoftwareprojectmanagementplacestheresponsibilityforsuccessfirmlyontheshouldersofthepeopleinvolved,projectmembers,projectleade

4、rs,managers.Thecompetenceapproachisdevelopedthroughaninvestigationoftheexperiencesofprojectmanagersinamediumsizedsoftwaredevelopmentcompany(WM-data)inDenmark.Startingwithasimplemodelrelatingprojectconditions,projectmanagementcompetencesanddesiredprojectoutcomes,wecollecteddatathroughintervie

5、ws,focusgroupsandonelargeplenarymeetingwithmostofthecompany’sprojectmanagers.Dataanalysisemployedcontentanalysisforconcept(variable)developmentandcausalmappingtotracerelationshipsbetweenvariables.InthiswaywewereabletobuildupapictureofthecompetencesprojectmanagersuseintheirdailyworkatWM-data,

6、whichweargueisalsopartlygeneralisabletotheory.Thediscrepancybetweenthetwoperspectivesisdiscussed,particularlyinregardtothecurrentorientationofthesoftwareengineeringfield.Thestudyprovidesmanymethodologicalandtheoreticalstartingpointsforresearcherswishingtodevelopamoredetailedcompetenceperspec
