2、contextualknowledgeandtheanalysisofthestylisticfeaturesareproposedasthekeystothecorrectinterpretationofwordmeaning.Keywords:contextlinguisticcontextnon-linguisticcontextwordmeaningIIntroductionTheinterpretationofwordmeaningisofparamountimportanceforanon-nativelearnerbot
3、hinreadingandcommunication.Themeaningsofmostwordsaredependentoncontextbecausethemeaningsareinfluencedimmediatelybythelinguisticenvironment,andinmanycasesbythewholespeechsituationaswell.Withoutcontext,thereisnowaytodeterminethemeaningthatthespeakerintendstoconvey,whereas
4、withthecontextthereisgenerallynodangerofmisinterpretation,formeaninglivesincontextandthecontextthrowslightonmeaning(Zhang,1997,P:210).Inordertointerpretmeaningcorrectly,itisnecessarytostudycontextandresearchontheimportanceofcontext.Theemphasisofthispaperfocusesontherole
5、ofcontextintheinterpretationofmeaning.IIContextandItsDefinitionTheanthropologistBronislowMalinowskifirstraised“Contextofsituation”inthe1920s.Accordingtohim,themeaningofanutterancedoesnotcomefromtheideaofthewordscomprisingitbutfromitsrelationtothesituationalcontextinwhic
6、htheutteranceoccurs.He(1923)writes,“Whenwepassfromamoderncivilizedlanguage…toaprimitivetongue…thereitshouldbeclearatoncethatconceptionofmeaningascontainedinutteranceisfalseandfutile…,utterancesandsituationareboundupinextricablywitheachotherandthecontestofsituationisindi
7、spensablefortheunderstandingofthewords.”Inthe1930s,J.R.Firthadvancedthetheoryofcontext.AccordingtoJ.R.Firth,contextconsistsoftwoparts;oneisinter-language,theotherisextra-language,namely,thespecialsituationandconditioninwhichthespeechoccurs.After1970s,asmanynewlinguistic
