2、ualknowledgeandtheanalysisofthestylisticfeaturesareproposedasthekeystothecorrectinterpretationofwordmeaning.Keywords:contextlinguisticcontextnon-linguisticcontextwordmeaningIIntroductionTheinterpretationofwordmeaningisofparamountimportanceforanon-nativelearnerbothinreadingandc
3、ommunication.Themeaningsofmostwordsaredependentoncontextbecausethemeaningsareinfluencedimmediatelybythelinguisticenvironment,andinmanycasesbythewholespeechsituationaswell.Withoutcontext,thereisnowaytodeterminethemeaningthatthespeakerintendstoconvey,whereaswiththecontextthereis
4、generallynodangerofmisinterpretation,formeaninglivesincontextandthecontextthrowslightonmeaning(Zhang,1997,P:210).Inordertointerpretmeaningcorrectly,itisnecessarytostudycontextandresearchontheimportanceofcontext.Theemphasisofthispaperfocusesontheroleofcontextintheinterpretation
5、ofmeaning.IIContextandItsDefinitionTheanthropologistBronislowMalinowskifirstraised“Contextofsituation”inthe1920s.Accordingtohim,themeaningofanutterancedoesnotcomefromtheideaofthewordscomprisingitbutfromitsrelationtothesituationalcontextinwhichtheutteranceoccurs.He(1923)writes,
6、“Whenwepassfromamoderncivilizedlanguage…toaprimitivetongue…thereitshouldbeclearatoncethatconceptionofmeaningascontainedinutteranceisfalseandfutile…,utterancesandsituationareboundupinextricablywitheachotherandthecontestofsituationisindispensablefortheunderstandingofthewords.”In
