5、especifically,wewishtoexaminetheincreas-ingadoptionofmoreopenapproachestoinnovation,andseehowwellthisadoptioncanbeexplainedwiththeoriesofbusinessstrategy.Inourview,openinnovationiscreatingnewempiricalphenomenathatexistuneasilywithwell-establishedtheoriesofbusines
6、sstrategy.Traditionalbusinessstrategyhasguidedfirmstodevelopdefensiblepositionsagainsttheforcesofcompetitionandpowerinthevaluechain,implyingtheimportanceofconstructingbarrierstocompeti-tion,ratherthanpromotingopenness.Recently,however,firmsandevenwholeindustries,s
7、uchasthesoftwareindustry,areexperimentingwithnovelbusinessmodelsbasedonharnessingcollectivecreativitythroughopeninnovation.Theapparentsuccessofsomeoftheseexperimentschallengesprevailingviewsofstrategy.Atthesametime,recentdevelopmentsindicatethatmanyoftheseexper-
8、imentersnowaregrapplingwithissuesrelatedtovaluecaptureandsustainabil-ityoftheirbusinessmodels,aswellasissuesofcorporateinfluenceandthepotentialco-optionofopeninitiativ
