2、siveopenonlinecourses(MOOCs)havegeneratedenthusiasm,excitement,andhypeworldwideandrecentlyincreasingskepticism.Theyarebeingbroadlydiscussedinthemajornewsmedia(andtoasmallerextentinacademiccircles).RapidlyincreasingnumbersofMOOCproviders,MOOCcoursesandarticles,discussiongroups,andblogsdis

3、cussingMOOCsareindicatorsoftheinvolve-mentofmanystakeholders.Mostoftheseanalysesanddevelopmentsarebasedoneconomicperspectives(suchasscalability,productivity,andbeingfree)andtechnologyperspectives(includingplatformssupportinglargenumberofstudentsinonlineenvironments,enrichmentcomponentssu

4、chasforums,peer-to-peerlearningsupport,andautomaticgrading).FewcontributionsanalyzeMOOCsfromalearningscienceperspectiveandputthemintoalargercontextwithotherapproachestolearningandeducation.ThiscommentaryexploreschallengesderivedfromtheperspectivetoconceptualizeMOOCsasbeingonecomponentina
