2、nyofthelong-promisedbenefitsofuniversalhighereducation.WhiletherearemanypositiveaspectstotheMOOCsonofferandindevelopment,therearealsosignificantethicalconcernsarisingfromvari-ousinitiatives.Theseincludetheacademicdutiesofcareandintegrity,commer-cialexploitationoflearners,aswellasresearche

3、thicsconcernsarisingfromtheanalyticalandotherworkbeingdonebyacademicsandinstitutions.TheseissuesareexploredandasetofheuristicsforindividualsandinstitutionsprovidedasastartingpointforethicalanalysisofMOOCsandassociatedactivities.Keywords:massiveopenonlinecourse(MOOC);ethics;pedagogicalin

5、ostimportanteducationtechnologyin200years”(Regalado,2012)noraretheylikelytoheraldBillGates”“goldenera”ofe-learning(Grossman,2013),buttheyhaveclearlystimulatedare-examinationofonlinelearninginmanyinstitutions(Allen&Seaman,2014).DespitethesubstantialvolumeofresearchandcommentaryonMOOCs,th

6、erehasyettobeanysubstantiveengagementwiththeethicalissuesassociatedwiththisresearch(Liyanagunawardena,Adams,&Williams,2013)withonlyonepeer-reviewedarticleidentifiedintheMOOCliterature(Esposito,2012).Thislackofengagementwithethicalissuesisaconcern.Institutionsandaca-demicsarenotactingfrom

7、ablankslate;explicitlyandimplicitlymanyMOOCini-tiativesaredrawinguponexistingreputationsandtheculturalcapitalthathighereducationhasinmanycountries.Inassociatingthesenewformsofeducationwithexistingsystemsandinstitutionsofsocietywehaveaprofessionalandsocialobliga-tiontoensurethat
