3、ssumesanyGaussiansystemtobevalidasaspace-timecoordinatesystem.Giventhemathematicalexistenceoftheco-movinglocalMinkowskispacealongatime-likegeodesicinaLorentzmanifold,acrucialquestionforasatisfactionoftheequivalenceprincipleiswhetherthegeodesicrepresentsaphysicalfree

4、fall.Forinstance,ageodesicofanon-constantmetricisunphysicaliftheaccelerationonarestingobserverdoesnotexist.ThisanalysisismodeledafterEinsteinillustrationoftheequivalenceprinciplewiththecalculationoflightbending.Tojustifyhiscalculationrigorously,itisnecessarytoderiv

5、etheMaxwell-NewtonApproximationwithphysicalprinciplesthatleadtogeneralrelativity.Itisshown,asexpected,thattheGalileantransformationisincompatiblewiththeequivalenceprinciple.Thus,generalmathematicalcovariancemustberestrictedbyphysicalrequirements.Moreover,itisshownth

6、roughanexamplethataLorentzmanifoldmaynotnecessarilybediffeomorphictoaphysicalspace-time.Alsoobservationsupportsthataspacetimecoordinatesystemhasmeaninginphysics.Ontheotherhand,Pauliversionleadstotheincorrectspeculationthatingeneralrelativityspace-timecoordinateshav
