2、hesecondkind,andcriticalphenomena.Thechaptersonsolidsandonthesymmetryofcrystalshavebeensubstan-tiallyenlarged,inparticularbyafulleraccountofthetheoryofirreduciblerepresentationsofspacegroupsasappliedtothephysicsofthecrystalstate.Thesectionsonthefluctuation-dissipationtheoremhavebeen
3、revisedandextended.Somesections-havebeenremovedfromthebook,dealingwiththetheoryofquantumliquidsandthereIatedtheoryofalmostidealdegenerategases.Thephysicsbfquantumliquids,whichwasfoundedandlargelydevelopedbythepioneeringexperimentsofP.L.KapitzaandthetheoreticalworkofLandauhimself,has
4、nowbecomeawidesubjectwhosesignificancegoesfarbeyonditsoriginalconcern,theliquidheliumisotopes.Anaccountofthetheoryofquantumliquidsmustnowoccupyitsrightfulplaceinevenageneralcourseoftheoreticalphysics,andthefewsectionsgiventoitintheearliereditionsofthisbookareinsufficient.Theywillapp
5、ear,inaconsiderablyexpandedform,inanothervolumebfthiscourse,nowbeingpreparedbyPitaevskilandmyself,whichwillalsogiveadetailedtreatmentoftheGreensfunctionmethodandthediagramtechnique,whichhavelargelydeterminedthedevelopmentofstatisticalphysicsinthelast20years.Thetransferofthese(andsom
6、eother)topicstoaseparatevolumeisdictatednotonlybythefactthattheirinclusioninthepresentonewouldmakeittoolargeandwouldconsiderablyalteritswholecharacter.Thereisalsothereasonthatsuchtopicsareessentiallyakintohydrodynamicsandmacroscopicelectrodynamics;forexample,inpresentingthemicroscop
