2、iontheoryofphasetransitionsofthesecondkind,andcriticalphenomena.Thechaptersonsolidsandonthesymmetryofcrystalshavebeensubstan-tiallyenlarged,inparticularbyafulleraccountofthetheoryofirreduciblerepresentationsofspacegroupsasappliedtothephysicsofthecrystal
3、state.Thesectionsonthefluctuation-dissipationtheoremhavebeenrevisedandextended.Somesections-havebeenremovedfromthebook,dealingwiththetheoryofquantumliquidsandthereIatedtheoryofalmostidealdegenerategases.Thephysicsbfquantumliquids,whichwasfoundedandlarge
4、lydevelopedbythepioneeringexperimentsofP.L.KapitzaandthetheoreticalworkofLandauhimself,hasnowbecomeawidesubjectwhosesignificancegoesfarbeyonditsoriginalconcern,theliquidheliumisotopes.Anaccountofthetheoryofquantumliquidsmustnowoccupyitsrightfulplaceinev
5、enageneralcourseoftheoreticalphysics,andthefewsectionsgiventoitintheearliereditionsofthisbookareinsufficient.Theywillappear,inaconsiderablyexpandedform,inanothervolumebfthiscourse,nowbeingpreparedbyPitaevskilandmyself,whichwillalsogiveadetailedtreatment
6、oftheGreensfunctionmethodandthediagramtechnique,whichhavelargelydeterminedthedevelopmentofstatisticalphysicsinthelast20years.Thetransferofthese(andsomeother)topicstoaseparatevolumeisdictatednotonlybythefactthattheirinclusioninthepresentonewouldmakeittoo
7、largeandwouldconsiderablyalteritswholecharacter.Thereisalsothereasonthatsuchtopicsareessentiallyakintohydrodynamicsandmacroscopicelectrodynamics;forexample,inpresentingthemicroscopictheoryofsupercondbctivityitisconvenienttomakeuseoftheknownmacroscopicth
