2、esecondkind,andcriticalphenomena.Thechaptersonsolidsandonthesymmetryofcrystalshavebeensubstan-tiallyenlarged,inparticularbyafulleraccountofthetheoryofirreduciblerepresentationsofspacegroupsasappliedtothephysicsofthecrystalstate.Thesectionsonthefluctuation-dissipationtheoremhavebeenre
3、visedandextended.Somesections-havebeenremovedfromthebook,dealingwiththetheoryofquantumliquidsandthereIatedtheoryofalmostidealdegenerategases.Thephysicsbfquantumliquids,whichwasfoundedandlargelydevelopedbythepioneeringexperimentsofP.L.KapitzaandthetheoreticalworkofLandauhimself,hasnow
4、becomeawidesubjectwhosesignificancegoesfarbeyonditsoriginalconcern,theliquidheliumisotopes.Anaccountofthetheoryofquantumliquidsmustnowoccupyitsrightfulplaceinevenageneralcourseoftheoreticalphysics,andthefewsectionsgiventoitintheearliereditionsofthisbookareinsufficient.Theywillappear,
5、inaconsiderablyexpandedform,inanothervolumebfthiscourse,nowbeingpreparedbyPitaevskilandmyself,whichwillalsogiveadetailedtreatmentoftheGreensfunctionmethodandthediagramtechnique,whichhavelargelydeterminedthedevelopmentofstatisticalphysicsinthelast20years.Thetransferofthese(andsomeothe
6、r)topicstoaseparatevolumeisdictatednotonlybythefactthattheirinclusioninthepresentonewouldmakeittoolargeandwouldconsiderablyalteritswholecharacter.Thereisalsothereasonthatsuchtopicsareessentiallyakintohydrodynamicsandmacroscopicelectrodynamics;forexample,inpresentingthemicroscopictheo
