3、istorianoftheancientworld.LifeApartfromhisownwritings,themainsourceforProcopius'lifeisanentryintheSuda,[1]a10thcenturyByzantineencyclopediathattellsnothingabouthisearlylife.HewasanativeofCaesareainPalaestinaPrima[2](modernIsrael).HewouldhavereceivedaconventionaléliteeducationintheGreekclassi
4、csandthenrhetoric,[3]perhapsatthefamousSchoolofGaza,[4]mayhaveattendedlawschool,possiblyatBerytus(modernBeirut)orConstantinople,[5]andbecamearhetor(barristeroradvocate).[1]HeevidentlyknewLatin,aswasnaturalforamanwithlegaltraining.[6]In527,thefirstyearofEasternRomanEmperorJustinianI'sreign,he
5、becametheadsessor(legaladviser)forBelisarius,Justinian'schiefmilitarycommanderwhowasthenbeginningabrilliantcareer.[7]ProcopiuswaswithBelisariusontheeasternfrontuntilthelatterwasdefeatedattheBattleofCallinicuminAD531[8]andrecalledtoConstantinople.[9]ProcopiuswitnessedtheNikariotsofJanuary,532
6、,whichBelisariusandhisfellowgeneralMundorepressedwithamassacreintheHippodrome.[10]In533,heaccompaniedBelisariusonhisvictoriousexpeditionagainsttheVandalkingdominNorthAfrica,tookpartinthecaptureofCarthage,andremainedinAfricawithBelisarius'successorSolomontheEunuchwhenBelisariusreturnedtoConst
