5、mi-independentmilitarygovernorsofHo-pel,defeatingtheUighurs,andoverseeingthedissolutionoftheBuddhistChurchduringtheHul-oh'angreignperiod(844-6)whenheservedaschiefminister,LlTe-yu(787-8^9)becameoneofthemostpowerfulpoliticalfiguresinT'angChina.Thisstud
6、ywillfocusonhowtheimperialgovernmentIn8^3-^putdowntherebellionInChao-1whicharosewhenthecourtrefusedtoallowLiuChentosucceedtohisuncle1spositionofmilitarygovernor.TheAnLu-shanrebellion(755-62)resultedinthelossoftherichnortheasternprovincesofcontemporar
7、yHo-pei.FurtherdefeatsthereIn782-4-forcedthecourttoallowhereditarysuccessionamongitsmilitarygovernors.DuringtheYuan-horestoration(805-20)thisregionbrieflyreturnedtocourtcontrolbutagainrebelled.Theirnewleaderswere,however,alesserbreedofmen.Chao-iwasno
8、tapartofHo-peibutanintegralprovinceoftheempirewhich,exceptforthe'twenty-threeyearsofLiufamilyrule,hadremainedloyaltothecourt.Furthermore,ItoccupiedthestrategicpositionasthebufferzonebetweenHo-pelandthevitalcanalsystem—theeconomiclifelineoftheempire.i
