1、MonumentsandLandscapeinAtlanticEuropeAtlanticEuropeisthezoneparexcellenceofmegalithicmonumentswhichencompassesawiderangeofearthenandstoneconstructionsfromimpressivecirclestomodestchamberedtombs.Asinglebasicconceptliesbehindthisvolume:thattheintrinsicqualitiesencounteredwithinthediv

2、erselandscapesofAtlanticEuropebothinformedthesettingschosenforthemonumentsandplayedaroleindeterminingtheirformandvisualappearance.This,inpart,derivesfromtheuseoflocalmaterialsandthemannerinwhichtheyweredisplayedwithinthemonuments:forexamplehowstone,clearlytakenfromthelocalgeology,w

3、asvisiblyincorporated.Yetwemaygofurtherthanthisinsomeinstancesandproposethatthenatureoflocallandformsitselfbothattractedmonuments,providingmeaningfulordramaticsettings,andofferedaseriesofideaswhichplayedsomepartininfluencingtheformofthosemonumentsthemselves.MonumentsandLandscapeinAt

4、lanticEuropegoessignificantlybeyondthelimitsoftheexistingdebatebyinvitingarchaeologistsfromdifferentcountrieswithintheAtlanticzonetoexaminetherelationshipbetweenlandscapefeaturesandprehistoricmonumentsintheirspecialistregions.Byplacingtheissuewithinabroaderregionalandintellectualcon
