1、In2009wesaidgoodbyetoHarryPatch,thelastsurvivorofthegenerationofsoldierswhoriskedtheirlivesforBritainintheGreatWar.Aswemournedhim,werememberedtooallthosewhohavelaiddowntheirlivesinthedefenceofthiscountrywelove.LastyearwasparticularlytoughforourforcesinAfghanistan,andwefacesomemore
2、difficultmonthsahead.InlateDecemberwewereremindedatthisdecade’send,justaswewereatitsbeginning,thatthereisaterroristthreatwhichputsoursafetyandsecurityatriskandwhichrequiresustotakeonalQaedaandtheTalibanattheepicentreofglobalterrorism-whichisthemountainsofAfghanistanandPakistan.And
3、whileprogressisdifficult,Iamworkingeverydayandwillcontinuetostepupoureffortswithnolet-uptodisrupttheabilityofterroriststomountattacksonBritain,andtoworkwithothercountriestopreventterrorismonourstreets.Thiswillhavemyrelentlessfocusin2010,justasAfghanistanwillhave.Wewillsteadilybegi
4、vingmorecontrolofAfghanistantoAfghantroopsandpolice.Asweenteranewdecade,IwillcontinuetodowhatisnecessarytoprotectandimprovethisgreatcountryintheinterestsofallthepeopleofBritain.Inmylife,Ihavelearntthatthereareonlyreallytwokindsofpeople-thosewhothinkthingscanneverchange,andthosewho
5、believetheyhaveto.AndIthinkthevastmajorityofpeopleareinthesecondcamp.Weareanationthatlookstothefuture,combiningresponsibilitywithfairness,compassionwithaspiration-alwaysreachinghigher,dreamingbigger,aimingforevengreaterthings.Therearesomewhosaywemustplanforadecadeofausterity.Iftha
6、thappeneditwouldalsobeadecadeofunfairnesswhere,whiletheprivilegedfewcanprotectthemselves,themajorityloseout.Ibelievewecancreateanewdecadeofprosperitywithopportunitiesfairlysharedamongstallthosewhoworkhardandplaybytherules.ThatiswhywearefightingsohardtosecureandsustainBritain’sreco
7、very.Thelast18monthshavebeendifficult,andtoomanypeoplewerehitbyacrisisthatoriginatedintheUShousingmarketandthencamerollingacrosstheAtlantictowardsus-acrisisthathitBritainhardbecausethefinancialsectorissuchanimportantpartofoureconomy.Butthisisanationoffightersandbelieverswhomeeteac
