2、mdelightedtobehereinthecityofBeijingtoopenthefirstUK-ChinaBusinessSummitof2008.WithmearenotonlymycolleaguesJohnHutton,fromwhomyouhavejustheard,andDigbyJones,but250ofthemostseniorbusinessmenandwomenfromBritainforwhomthedeepeninglinksbetweenBritainandChinamat

3、terhugely.Andthepresenceofsomanyofourbusinessleaders,bothChineseandBritish,inthishallispowerfulproofofthedeepeningandgrowingpartnershipbetweenourtwocountries.TodaytheUnitedKingdomisthelargestEuropeaninvestorinChinawith6,000projectsworthintotalover$15billion

4、.LondonranksasthemostpowerfulandpopulardestinationforChinesecompaniesexpandingintoEurope.TradebetweenushasdoubledeveryfiveyearsinrecenttimesandthisallbringstofruitionthehopeexpressedbyPremierWenfiveyearsagoofBritainbecomingChina'sleadingEuropeanpartner.Andw

5、hileweallknowthatthenextstageofglobaleconomicchangebringseachofourcountries'insecurities,aswellaschallengesandopportunities,IbelievethattherearegreatpossibilitiesaheadforanevengreaterprosperitythatnowbeckonChinaandBritaintogether.Ibelievewecanmakebestuseoft

6、heseopportunitiesingreatercooperationandinsustainedpartnership.Othersseeglobalisationasarisk.IseetheriseofChinaandtherealityofglobalisationnotasathreatbutasanopportunity,anopportunitybecauseChinaisavastpotentialmarketforBritishcompanies,anopportunitybecause

7、BritainwithourlongrecordofeconomicstabilityandofopennessandofenterpriseiswellplacedtoaugmentourreputationasadestinationofchoiceforChinesebusinessandChineseinvestment,andanopportunitybecauseBritainandChinacancontributetogethertothegreaterprosperityofabetterw

8、orld.WithoneandaquarterbillionconsumershereinChina,forBritishcompaniestoattractevenafractionofthatChinesemarket,willprovidevastlymoreopportunitiesforBritainthanpartnershipswithmanyothercountries.Somypr
