1、Usage-basedLinguisticsanditsImplicationsforSecondLanguageAcquisitionAbstract:Usage-basedlinguisticsisacognitiveapproachtolanguage.Itholdsthat“language,liketherestofcognition,isdynamical,situated,andembodied”(Ellis2008a),andhighlightstheimportanceofconstructionlearningintheemergenceofgrammar

2、,andbelievestheabstractionandacquisitionofconstructionisthroughusageandcommunicativeactivities(Tomassello2003,2006).Inthispaper,theauthorgivesabriefreviewofafewpaperswhichrelateusage-basedlinguisticstothefieldofsecondlanguageacquisition.Althoughscholarsmayhavesomedisagreements,andtheirfocus

3、esofstudymaybedifferent,theirstudiesgenerallydemonstratethatthehypothesesofusage-basedlinguisticsarebasicallyright.Thestudyshowsunderstandinglanguageinausage-basedwaywillinfluencethestudyofsecondlanguageacquisition.KeyWords:usage-basedlinguistics;SLA;formulaiclanguage;frequency1.Whatisusage

4、-basedlinguistics?Usage-basedlinguisticsisageneralapproachtolanguage,highlightingthelanguageuseandcognition,andmanylinguistswiththeirownbackgroundscanbeinvolvedinthisumbrellaterm.TomaselloregardedLangacker,Bybee,Fillmore,GoldbergandCroftas“usage-basedlinguists”(Tomasello2003:99),andconclude

5、dthattheyallbelievethat“allthingsflowfromtheactualusageeventsinwhichpeoplecommunicatelinguisticallywithoneanother”(Tomasello2006:439),andtheyallbelievelinguisticskillsareintheformofa“structuredinventoryofsymbolicunits”,resultingfrompeople’saccumulatedexperiencewithlanguageacrossthetotalityo

6、fusageeventsinherlife”,andtheyallfocuson“thestudyofhowhumanbeingsbuildupthemostbasicaspectsoftheirlinguisticcompetenceduringchildhood.”(ibid.:439).Morebroadly,Tyler(2010)includedsystemicfunctionallinguistics,discoursefunctionalism,andcognitivelinguisticsunderthetitleofusage-basedapproaches.

7、Generallyspeaking,usage-basedlinguisticsisadivergencefromthemainstreamUG-approachestolanguage;itemphasizesgrammarandconstructionscanemergethroughusage,andtheabstractionoflanguageispartofhumancognition;itrejectsmanyofthemainstreamUG-basedapproachesandhold
