2、questionthatanEngineerhastoaskhim/herselfiswhatishowdoesitdeform,andwhendoesitbreak.Ultimately,ititstheanswertothosetwoquestionswhichwouldprovideuswithnotonlyapropersafetyassesmentofastructure,butalsohowtoproperlydesignit.Ironically,boththeACIandtheAISCcodesarebasedonlimitst

3、atedesign,yetpracticallyalldesignanalysesarelinearandelastic.Ontheotherhand,theEngineerisoftenconfrontedwiththetaskofdeterminingtheultimateloadcaryingcapacityofastructureortoassessitsprogressivedegradation(intheontectofaforensicstudy,ortherehabilitation,orlifeextensionofanex

4、istingstructure).Inthoseparticularsituations,theEngineershouldbecapableofgoingbeyondthesimplelinearelasticanalysisinvestigation.WhereastheFiniteElementMethodhasprovedtobeaverypowerfulinvestigativetool,itsproper(andcorrect)usageinthecontextofnon-linearanalysisrequiresasolidan

5、dthoroughunderstandingofthefundamentalsofMechanics.Unfortunately,thisisoftenforgottenasstudentsrushintoevermoreadvancedFEMclasseswithoutapropersolidbackgroundinMechanics.Inthehumbleopinionoftheauthor,thisunderstandingisbestachievedintwostages.First,thestudentshouldbeexposedt

6、othebasicprinciplesofContinuumMechanics.Detailedcoverageof(3D)Stress,Strain,GeneralPrinciples,andConstitutiveRelationsisessential.Inhereweshallgofromthegeneraltothespecific.Thenmaterialmodelsshouldbestudied.Plasticitywillprovideaframeworkfromwheretodeterminetheultimatestrengt
