3、boththeACIandtheAISCcodesarebasedonlimitstatedesign,yetpracticallyalldesignanalysesarelinearandelastic.Ontheotherhand,theEngineerisoftenconfrontedwiththetaskofdeterminingtheultimateloadcaryingcapacityofastructureortoassessitsprogressivedegradation(intheon
4、tectofaforensicstudy,ortherehabilitation,orlifeextensionofanexistingstructure).Inthoseparticularsituations,theEngineershouldbecapableofgoingbeyondthesimplelinearelasticanalysisinvestigation.WhereastheFiniteElementMethodhasprovedtobeaverypowerfulinvestigat
5、ivetool,itsproper(andcorrect)usageinthecontextofnon-linearanalysisrequiresasolidandthoroughunderstandingofthefundamentalsofMechanics.Unfortunately,thisisoftenforgottenasstudentsrushintoevermoreadvancedFEMclasseswithoutapropersolidbackgroundinMechanics.Int
6、hehumbleopinionoftheauthor,thisunderstandingisbestachievedintwostages.First,thestudentshouldbeexposedtothebasicprinciplesofContinuumMechanics.Detailedcoverageof(3D)Stress,Strain,GeneralPrinciples,andConstitutiveRelationsisessential.Inhereweshallgofromtheg
