2、edin1836. TheMillontheFloss involvesmanyautobiographicaldetails,anditreflectsEliot'sclosechildhoodrelationshipswithherfatherandherolderbrotherIsaac.EliotwassenttoschoolasachildandattheageoffifteenandunderwentaspiritualconversiontoEvangelicism,similartoMaggi
3、eTulliver'spiousconversionuponreadingThomasaKempisinBookIVofTheMillontheFloss.In1841,EliotandherfathermovedclosertothetownofCoventry,whichwasatthattimeacentreofradicalthought.EliotmadefriendswithagroupofCoventryintellectuals,mainlymembersoftheBrayfamily,and
4、beganreadingsuchworksas AnEnquiryintotheOriginsofChristianity. EliotsoongaveupherEvangelicisminfavourofanon-sectarianspiritualitybasedonasenseofcommonhumanity.SherefusedtoattendchurchwithherfatherandbeganworkonatranslationfromGermanof LifeofJesus, arational

6、tellectualsofthetime,suchasHerbertSpencer,JohnStuartMill,andHarrietMartineau.In1852,EliotmetandbecameclosetoGeorgeHenryLewes,awriterandaneditorof TheLeader.eweswaslivingapartfromhiswife,andEliot'sdecisiontoaccompanyLewestoGermany,livingasacouple,provokedade
