1、5PHILIPPINESOLIDWASTEMANAGEMENTThePhilippinesgeneratesabout10,000milliontonsofsolidwasteperyearandonly12percentofthewasteisrecycledandre-used.Thesinglemostdominantissueforsolidwastemanagement(SWM)istheinadequacyofdisposalfacilities.Presently,opendumpingisstill
2、themostcommonwastedisposalmethodascontrolleddumpsitesandsanitarylandfills(SLFs)areverylimited.Theopportunitiespresentedbythisseriousenvironmentalproblemtosuppliersofsolidwastemanagementproductsandequipmentareenormous.Thepotential,however,istemperedbyinadequate
3、fundsandtechnicalcapability,lackofpoliticalwillandotherproblems.Despitethelimitations,themarketforSWMisstillexpectedtogrowfivepercentinthenextthreeyears.Themajorend-usersofSWMproductsandequipmentarethelocalgovernmentunitsandtheirprivatecontractorsaswellaspriva
4、teproponentsofSWMprojects.Theequipmentcostandthesourceofprojectfundingaremajorpurchaseconsiderationsofend-users.OverviewSolidwasteisanenvironmentalproblemthathasreachedcriticalproportionsinthePhilippines.Duetoagrowingpopulation,rapidlyincreasingconsumptionandi
5、ncreasingurbanization,wastegeneratedinthePhilippinesisestimatedat19,700tonsperday.Projectionsshowthatwastegenerationwillincrease47percentby2010,or28,875tonsperday.SWMistheresponsibilityoflocalgovernmentunits(LGUs),i.e.,barangays(thesmallestpoliticalunitcompose
6、dof50-100families),municipalities,citiesandprovincialgovernments.Thereare41,392barangays,1502municipalities,116citiesand71provincesnationwide.Thebarangayisresponsibleforthesegregationofwasteatsource,collectionofbiodegradableandrecyclablecomponentsandsettingupo
7、famaterialsrecoveryfacility(MRF).Thereareabout976MRFsnationwide.Themunicipalityorcitygovernmentsareresponsibleforthecollectionanddisposalofresidualnonbiodegradableandhazardouswaste,exceptinMetroManilawheredisposaliswithinthemandateoftheMetroManilaDevelopmentAu
8、thority(MMDA).RepublicAct(RA)No.9003(EcologicalSolidWasteManagementActof2000)wassignedintolawinJanuary2000toaddressthegargantuansolidwasteproblemofthePhilippines.Itespousesthereuse
