3、orsocolleaguesmakingupthevariouscommitteegroupsfortheirforbearanceandbenevolencetowardsme.Iamproudofthisaward,becauseitmakesmeonlythefourthCaltechfacultyrecipient,withTheodorevonKarman,EliSternbergandAnatolRoshkotheforerunners,andwithtwoofthesebeingheavilydevotedtoexperimentalwork.Ibelon
4、gtoagenerationthatnolongerhasapersonalconnectiontoStepanProkofievichTimoshenko,nordoIpossessanacademicgenealogywhichconnectsmetohim,otherthantheassiduousstudiesofhis“blackbooks”asotherTimoshenkoawardeeshavecalledthem.Instead,myhistorylinksme,indirectsequence,toMaxWilliams,ErnieSechler,Th
5、eodorevonKarman,LudwigPrandtl,AugustFöppelandChristianOttoMohr,ofMohr’scirclefame:Iowealottothese,myacademic“forefathers”.OneoftheintendedpurposesoftheaddressesfollowingtheTimoshenkoawarddinnersis,ifsomewhatloosely,topreserveahistoryof(applied)mechanics.Thechoiceofmytitleimpliestherevers
6、e,namelythatmechanicscananddoesdescribeorcontrolhistory.Thatisindeedtrueifonethinksofthestructuralsystemsthatcontainviscoelasticmaterialswhichrequirethetrackingofthedeformationorloadinghistoriestodescribethesystemresponse.Thismaybeasuperficialtwistofwords,buttherealisticimplicationsarese
