4、wedunderorpavedover,wecanendeavortoreplacethembyfillingthebuiltenvironmentnotjustwithlawnsandplazasandfountainsbutwithecosystems.Anecosystemconsistsofallofthelivingorganismsinanareaalongwiththeirphysicalenviron-ment,anditspropertiesarisefromtheinteraction
5、sbetweenthesecomponents.Anoceanbayisanecosystem,asisanalpinemeadoworagreenroof.Perhapsbecauseoftheirclearboundaries,lakesandstreamswereimportantobjectsofstudyinthedevelopmentofecosystemecology.Wherebound-ariesarelessdistinct,thelimitsofanecosystemcanbede
6、fined,evenarbitrarily,basedonthequestionanecologistisstudyingortheboundariesofadesigner’ssite.Designedlandscapesalreadybringtogetheramanipulatedphysicalenvironmentandlivingor-ganisms.Theydonotnecessarilyfunctionasnaturalecosystemsdo,however.Theyaredisconn
7、ect-ed,toooftenwastefulanddemanding,orelsetheysimplyfailtothrive.Whenwesucceedincreat-ingintegratedecosystems,theresultscanberemarkable.Lifecanspringforth,almostunbidden.Wastescanbetransformedintoresources.Thevariousmembersofalivingcommunitycanreachatent
