2、erritoryWithsupportfromanabundanceofhistoricrecordsandinternationallaws,wecanclaimthattheNanshaIslandsanditssurroundingwaters,thecenterpieceofcontentionsovertheSouthChinaSea,areChineseterritory.SomeneighboringcountriesinSoutheastAsia,however,disputethishighlycorroboratedfact,challengingthe

3、marineboundarydemarcationandlayingclaimstoresourcesinthearea.AsearlyasthesecondcenturyBCChinesepeoplefirstdiscoveredandnamedtheNanshaIslands,andhavesincegainedmoreknowledgeof14theareawiththedevelopmentofitsshippingindustry.MultiplenameswereappliedtothisclusterofsmallislandsintheTang(618-90

4、7)andSong(960-1279)dynastiesandlaterregimes,duringwhichtheirshapes,locations,shippingroutes,shoalsandhiddenreefswerealldetailedinaraftofancientdocumentsandbooks.TheChinesemadetheearliestrecordedexplorationoftheseislands.RecordsofRarities(YiwuZhi)abookcompletedinthelateHanDynasty(206BC-AD22

5、0)wroteaboutChinesefishingintheregion.BytheMing(1368-1644)andQing(1644-1911)dynasties,fishermenfromChina’sHainanIslandhadreachedsignificantnumbersandthescopeoftheiractivitiessteadilyexpanded,accompaniedbytheestablishmentofseveraltraderoutes.MeanwhiletheyreclaimedlandandgrewtreesontheNansha

6、Islands.Intime,suchexplorationandactivitieswererecognizedbysailorsofforeignnationalities.The1868GuidetotheSouthChinaSeabyBritishnavyhaveaccountsoftheactivitiesofChinesefishermenintheNanshaIslands.Accordingtothe14Guide,fishermenfromHainanIslandwouldtraveltoZhengHeIslesandReefswheretheywould
