4、isnotmerelytreatedasalexicalmatter,ashiftinganddisplacementofechanismofhumanthoughtinvolvingtheattributionofcertainfeaturesfromonething(i.e.vehicle)toanother(i.e.tenor).Somelinguists,takeLakoffJohnson(1980)forexample,definemetaphorasanessentialmechanismanbein

5、gsconceptualizetheirexperienceoftheetaphoraremoreorlessconfinedtotheperspectiveoflexicallevel.Halliday,believesthatmetaphoricalvariationcannotonlyoccuratlexicallevel,butatlexicogrammaticallevelasmaticalmetaphortodesignatethatmetaphoricalexpressionsinvolvelexi

6、cogrammaticaltransferencesfromonekindtoanother.He(2004:233)alsoholdstheviematicalmetaphorsarenottenabutare“bothaspectsofthesamegeneralmetaphoricalstrategybyanticresourcesforconstruingexperience.”InhisseriesofarticlesconcerningLanguageofScience,Halliday(1966,1
