4、Kansas,Massachusetts,andMichiganreportedthatstandardizedtestinghadimprovedtheirreadingandmathinstruction,buttheyhadhadtodropotherimportantcurricularactivitiestomaketime.Urbanandruralteachersweremorelikelythansuburbanteacherstoreportsuchashift,causinggreaterinequityint
5、heseothercurricularareas.1Asurveyofprincipalsinotherstatesfoundthatthoseinhigh-minorityschoolsweremorelikelytohavereducedtimeforhistory,civics,geography,thearts,andforeignlanguagesinordertodevotemoretimetomathandreading.3Thegrowingnationaldiabetesepidemicalsoshowshowacc
6、ountabilityformathandreadingalonecanexacerbateinequityinotherimportantaspectsofschooling.African-Americansare60%morelikelythanWhitestohavediabetes.Onecauseisthedisproportionatedeclineinphysicalactivityofminorityyouth,partlybecausemathandreadingtestpreparationhassubstitu
7、tedforgymclasses.African-Americanelementaryschoolchildrenare50%morelikelytobeoverweightthanWhites,whoaretwiceaslikelytohaveorganizeddailyphysicalactivity.Fromcolonialtimesthroughthe1920s,Americanswantedschoolstoteachbasicacademicskills,buttheywantedmoreaswell.Ifanything
