4、antlythattheyareinthepresenceofgreatness.Forexample,ThePickwickPapersgivesarathercomprehensivepictureoftheEnglishsocietyofDickens1time,andtheblendingofhumourwithsatire,plusthebrilliantportraitsofPickwickandSamWellermakethebookdeservedlythefirstimportantworkofDickens.Inhisworks,Dickens
5、givesupamostvividpictureoftheeverydaylifeoftheordinarypeopleofhistime.Hecreatedalargenumberofcharacters,welldrawn,fulloflifeandunforgettable.Hehadsufferedsobitterlyhimselfasachildandhadseensomuchevilthatheburnedwiththedesiretofightittotheend.Inmanyways,ofcourse,hestillbelongedtohisage
6、andshowedthelimitsofpetty-bourgeoisoutlook.Whilepresentingatruthfulaccountofthehardshipsbornebythepoorpeople,hebelievedthatahard-workingandhonestmancouldyetachievehislittlepersonalhappinessundercapitalism.Hecriticizedthevicesofcapitalistsociety,butfailedtoseethenecessityofabitterstrug
