2、September7,1973SummarySomecharacteristicsofavirus,isolatedfromthetonsilsof2pigswithclinicalsignsofinappeteneeandvomitionanddesignatedVW572wereexamined.Itinducedtheformationofsyneytiainprimarypigkidneycellcultures,causedhemadsorptionandhemagglutinationusingchicken,
3、turkey,ratandmouseerythrocytes.Ingrowthcurveexperiments,infectiousviruswasproducedintra-cellularlystartingat6hoursafterinoculationandwasfollowedbyrapidreleaseofthevirusfromtheinfectedcells.Theviruscontainsribonucleicacid,isethersensitiveandhasasizebetween100and220
4、nm.At37~C,theinfectivitytiterdecreasedabout2lOgl0TCIDs0per24hours.Theviralpopulationwasheterogen-eousasindicatedbytherateofinactivationbyU.V.irradiationandacidpH.Somehemagglutinatingactivitywasleftaftercompletelossofinfectivitybyether-,temperature-andU.V.treatment
5、.TheVW572isolateisantigenicallyrelatedifnotidenticaltoisolatesfromCanada,U.S.A.andEnglandwhichwereclassifiedasaporcineeoronavirus.OronasalandintracerebralinoculationoftheVW572isolateincolostrumdeprivedpigsresultedinclinicaldiseaseafteranincubationperiodof6and4days
6、,respectively.Signswerecharacterizedbydepression,vomition,lossofappetencewithrapidweaknessinyoungpigsandvomitionwithprogressivewastinginolderpigs.Viruswasisolatedfromnasalandpharyngealswabs,nasalmueosa,tonsils,lungsandhindbrainsbutnotfromrectalswabsorotherorganste
7、sted.Viruscouldnotbeisolatedlaterthan8daysafterinoculation.Hemagglutinationinhibitingandneutralizingantibodiesweredetectedinseraat6daysand9daysafterinoculation,respectively.1.IntroductionStartingin1968,apreviouslyunrecognizeddiseaseinpigswasobservedinseveralEurope
