2、on:localviolenceagainstcoffeefarmersinHonduras,fairtradeconsumerism,andinternationalregulatorytreaties.BycomparingthelocalpoliticsofHondurancoffeeproductiontoglobalformsofconsumeractivism,Ibringcontemporarydebatesabouteconomicjusticeunderasingleanalyticlens.Isuggestthatsystemati

3、cchangesintherelationshipbetweenstatesandnationshaveledalienatedcitizenstodevelopnewformsofregulationoutsidetheboundariesofthestate,andthatcoffeefrequentlyservesasametaphorthroughwhichpeoplecometotermswiththeirplaceintheglobaleconomy.Thismetaphorultimatelyrestsonanalienatedrepre

4、sentationoftheglobalsystemthatlimitsthepoliticalpotentialoftheseregulatorystrategies.Formorethanacentury,governmentsinadvancedcapitalistcountrieshaveusedreg-ulatorylawtodomesticatepuremarketforcesintheinterestofnationalsocieties.Inrecentyears,therealitiesoftheglobaldivisionoflab

5、orhaveoutgrowntheregulatorystructuresofnation-states,andnosupranationalagencyenforcesstandardsofeco-nomicjusticeatthegloballevel.Theimbalancebetweenhighnormativestandardsofjusticeandweakinstitutionalstructuresproducesdiscomfortamongcitizensofadvancedcountrieswhorelyonmass-produc

6、edcommoditiesfortheirlivelihood,butwhohavegrownaccustomedtotheideathatfaircapitalismisnotacontradictioninterms:Whoknowswhatnefariousformsofexploitationarehappeningontheothersideoftheworld?And,evenifonedidknow,whatcouldbedone?Inanenvironmentwhereexistingpoliticalinstitutionsseemi

7、ncapableofadaptingthestandardsofthemodernclasscompromisetotheglobaldivisionoflabor,concernedcitizensformu-lateandenforcenormativeprinciplesofeconomicjusticeoutsidetheboundariesofthenation-state.Therisingpopularityoffairtradeisthebestexampleofthisphenomenon.Fairtradeisanon-govern
