4、ewavelengthregionbetween1.6and2.1mm,itisnowpossibletofindafewsourcesbasedonrare-earth-dopedcrystals[1],butallofthemshowaverynarrowtuningrange.Adifferentapproachhasbeenattemptedinthepastbyusingcrystalsdopedwithtransition-metalions,characterizedbyamuchbroaderemissionrange,butwea
5、kerintensity.Thischaracteristichaspreventedthediffusionofcwcommerciallasersoperatinginthiswavelengthregion,unliketheenormoussuccessoftheTi:Sapphirelaser,whichisasourcewithasimilarstructureatshorterwavelength.Actually,theonlyknownandwell-documentedworksinthisfieldarethosepresen
