3、ba,1999)whichmeans“thenetherabyss,orinfinitedarkness,”andwaspersonifiedas“themostancientofthegods.”Namely,thegodChaoswasthefoundationofallcreation.FromthisgodaroseGaea(godoftheearth),Tartarus(godoftheunderworld)andEros(thegodoflove).ErosdrewChaosandGaeatogethersothattheycoul
4、dproducedescendants,thefirstbornofwhomwasUranus(thegodofthesky).ThisalsoresultedinthecreationoftheeldergodsknownasTitans.Theinteractionofthesegodsresultedinthecreationofothergods,includingsuchwell-knownfiguresasAphrodite,Hades,Poseidon,andZeus.ThereisaChinesemythofchaos(Liu,
5、1998),takenfromoneoftheancientChineseclassicsChuang-Tzu:“ThegodoftheSouthernSeawascalledShu(Change),thegodoftheNorthernSeawascalledHu(Suddenness),andthegodoftheCentralwascalledHun-tun(Chaos).ShuandHuoftencametogetherforameetingintheCentral,andHun-tuntreatedthemgenerously.S
6、huandHudeterminedtorepayhiskindness,andsaid,‘Mankindhassevenholesforseeing,hearing,eatingandbreathing;butHun-tunhasnoneofthem;letusboretheholesforhim!’So,everydaytheyboredoneholeinhishead.Ontheseventhday,Hun-tundied.”Thismythnotonlyindicatesthedisorder-likeorrandom-likebeh
