2、besaidaboutliterarystudies,whichcaneasilybedividedintoevenmoresubcategoriesthanstylistics.Literarytheoristsknowwheretheirobjectlies(i.e.,inliterature,beitfiction,poetry,ortheater).However,thecorporausedinstylistics,aspracticedinFrance,arenotrestrictedto"literature"asexpressedthroughnovels,pla
3、ys,orpoems.Thecorporaincludeanypieceofwritingonanysubject,frompoliticalspeechestothelanguageofadvertising(i.e.,"literature"intheverybroadsenseoftheword,asinthephrase"salesliterature").Foreign-languagedepartmentsinFrancehavebeentryingprogressivelytodevelopthestudyof"specializedvarieties"ofEngl
4、ish(orotherlanguages).Thesevarietiesinclude,forexample,thestudyofmedical,legal,commercial,orfinancialdiscourse.ThesefieldsofresearchhavetobeincludedinanysocietywhoseaimistostudytheproductionofdiscourseintheEnglishlanguage.TheSoci6t6deStylistiqueAnglaise,whichIrepresent,encouragesanyattemptatp
5、rovidingastylisticstudyofmedical,financial,orlegalvarietiesofEnglish,eventhoughthemajorityofthearticlesthatwepublishinourjournal,theBulletindelaSoci#tideStylistiqueAnglaise,aredevotedtoliterature.However,stylisticshastobemorethanjustthestudyoftheproductionofdiscourseinanyfield.Whatisatstakehe
6、reisthetheoreticalbackgroundwerelyon.Thisiswherelinguistics,ormoregenerallythephilosophyoflanguage,comesin.Stylisticsissometimesregardedasaformof"appliedlinguistics"-thatis,theapplicationoflinguistictheories,methods,andfindingstotheproductionoftexts,betheyliteraryornot.Themostinfluentialschoo
