2、ndpromotionofmanagersaswellasthemanagerialstylethattheydevelopwhenbecomingCEOs.Weidentifytheimpactofanexogenousshocktomanagers’careers,inparticularthebusinesscycleatthecareerstartingdate.Economicconditionsatthebeginningofamanager’scareerhavelastingeffectsonthecareerpathandtheultimateou

3、tcomeasaCEO.CEOswhostartinrecessionstakelesstimetobecomeCEOs,butendupasCEOsinsmallerfirms,receivelowercompensation,andaremorelikelytorisethroughtherankswithinagivenfirmratherthanmovingacrossfirmsandindustries.Moreover,managerswhostartinrecessionshavemoreconservativemanagementstylesonce

4、theybecomeCEOs.ThesemanagersspendlessincapitalexpendituresandR&D,havelowerleverage,aremorediversifiedacrosssegments,andshowmoreconcernsaboutcosteffectiveness.WhilelookingattheroleofearlyjobchoicesonCEOcareersismoreendogenous,theresultssupporttheideathatcertaintypesofstartingpositionsar
