2、velopmentofthenovelasagenretakesplaceinthefulllightofthehistoricalday.Thege•nericskeletonofthenovelisstillfarfromhavinghardened,andwecannotforeseeallitsplasticpossibilities.Weknowothergenres,asgemes,intheircompletedaspect,thatis,asmoreorlessfixedpre-existingformsintowhichonemaythenpourartisticex
3、perience.Theprimordialprocessoftheirformationliesoutsidehistoricallydocumentedobservation.Weencountertheepicasagenrethathasnotonlylongsincecompleteditsdevelopment,butonethatisalreadyantiquated.Withcertainreservationswecansaythesamefortheothermajorgemes,evenfortragedy.Thelifetheyhaveinhistory,the
4、lifewithwhichwearefamiliar,isthelifetheyhavelivedasalreadycompletedgenres,withahardenedandnolongerflexibleskel•eton.Eachofthemhasdevelopeditsowncanonthatoperatesinliteratureasanauthentichistoricalforce.Allthesegemes,orinanycasetheirdefiningfeatures,arecon•siderablyolderthanwrittenlanguageandtheb
