2、vicesandrestricttheircontrolovertheirownworkingconditionsshouldbereviewedandrepealed.Undoubtedlytheeverydaylifeofaprostitute,includingthewaysheorheworks,theirpersonalsafety,earnings,andcontactwiththepolice,isinfluencedbythelawsonprostitutionandthewaytheyareapplied.InmostEuropeanco
3、untriesprostitutionitselfisnotillegal;however,thepracticeofprostitutioniseffectivelyrenderedillegalthroughrestrictionsonorganising,advertisingandlivingofftheproceedsofprostitution.TheexactwordingofthelawvariesbetweencountriesinEuropeandthereareoftendisputesoverexactlywhatislegalan
4、dwhatisnot.Inaddition,thewayinwhichthelawsareenforcedvarieswidelyacrossEurope,withincountriesandovertime.Ingeneral,however,thosewhoareresponsibleforHIVpreventioninprostitutionhavefoundthatmanyofthelawsonprostitutionareabarriertothepracticeofsafersex.Thefollowingareexamplesofhowthi
5、smayworkinpractice;furtherdetailscanbefoundinthecountryreports.MandatorytestingandmandatoryregistrationLawsdemandingmandatorytestingandmandatoryregistrationcreatebarrierstohealthcareforsexworkers.Greecehadthemoststrictregulationsregardingregisteredprostitutes,withmandatorymedicals
6、creeningtwiceaweek.Asaresult,mostsexworkersavoidedregistration,whichmadethemliableforprosecution.AllhealthcarefacilitiesandHIVpreventionactivitiesforprostituteswerelimitedtothosewhoareregistered.Thisisineffectiveinpublichealthterms:inAthensapproximately400womenareregistered,whilea
7、nestimated5,000moreprostitutesarenotregistered.Atpresent,duetotheworkofthelocalco-ordinatorsofEUROPAP,regulationsarebeingreconsideredandlessstrictlyenforced.Healthservicesandpreventionactivitieswillalsobetargetedatnon-registeredprostitutes.InGermany,approximately50,000sexworkersar
