2、rsityofZurich;UniversityofLausanneabstractScholarsinmanagementandeconomicswidelysharetheassumptionthatbusinessfirmsfocusonprofitsonly,whileitisthetaskofthestatesystemtoprovidepublicgoods.Inthisviewbusinessfirmsareconceivedofaseconomicactors,andgovernmentsandthe
3、irstateagenciesareconsideredtheonlypoliticalactors.Wesuggestthat,undertheconditionsofglobalization,thestrictdivisionoflabourbetweenprivatebusinessandnation-stategovernancedoesnotholdanymore.Manybusinessfirmshavestartedtoassumesocialandpoliticalresponsibilitie
4、sthatgobeyondlegalrequirementsandfilltheregulatoryvacuuminglobalgovernance.Ourreviewoftheliteratureshowsthatthereareagrowingnumberofpublicationsfromvariousdisciplinesthatproposeapoliticizedconceptofcorporatesocialresponsibility.Weconsidertheimplicationsofthis
5、newperspectivefortheorizingaboutthebusinessfirm,governance,anddemocracy.INTRODUCTION:INCREASEDRESPONSIBILITIESOFBUSINESSFIRMSDuringthepastdecadesbusinessfirmshavestartedtoengageinactivitiesthathavetraditionallybeenregardedasactualgovernmentalactivities(Margoli
6、sandWalsh,2003;MattenandCrane,2005;SchererandPalazzo,2008a).Thisisespeciallytrueformultinationalcorporations(MNCs).Theyengageinpublichealth,education,socialsecurity,andprotectionofhumanrightswhileoftenoperatingincountrieswithfailedstateagencies(MattenandCran
7、e,2005);addresssocialillssuchasAIDS,malnutrition,homelessness,andilliteracy(MargolisandWalsh,2003;Rosenetal.,2003);defineethicscodes(Cragg,2005);protectthenaturalenvironment(Hart,2005;MarcusandFremeth,2009);engageinself-regulationtofillglobalgapsinlegalregulat
