2、‘globalization’istoochaoticaconceptandthe‘state’istooabstractaconcept,tosupportsolid,testablearguments.Thissituationarisesbecauseoftheconfusiongeneratedbycommentatorsandtheoristsfromthefactthatsomanydifferentperspectiveshavebeenexploringglobalization,theproblemsthatitallegedlycreatesfornati
3、on-statesand/ornationalstates,andtheprospectsforaworldstate,globalgovernance,orworldsociety.Becauseitisimpossibleinashortcontributiontosurveyonlythemostimportantapproachesandarguments,letaloneallofthem,thispaperwillpursueamorerestrictedsetofobjectives.Itfocusesontheconnectionsbetweentheform
4、ationoftheworldmarketandtheformationofnationalstatesandthenconsiderstoday’sneo-liberalglobalcapitalismandtheproblemsthatitcreatesforpoliticalorder.Itpaysparticularattentiontotheemergentlogicoftheworldmarket,theprospectsofaworldstate,andtherealityofworldsociety.Theconflictinglogicsofthesesph
5、eresposesaseriesofproblems,boththeoreticalandpractical,onhowmeta-stability,ifany,canbesecuredonaglobalscale.Irelatetheseproblemstothe‘ecologicaldominance’oftheworldmarketwithallitscontradictionsandcrisis-tendencies,i.e.,toitscapacitytocausemoreproblemsforotherpartsofworldsocietythantheycaus
6、eit.Whetherthereisasolutiontotheseproblemsisdiscussedintheclosingsectionsofmycontribution,whichaddressthenatureofworldsociety,globalcivilsociety,andquestionsofinstitutional1)designforabetterfuture.ThusIfirstexploreglobalizationasacomplex,incompleteprocess,notingitstemporalaswellasspatialmom
