3、EastBaydownthroughSanJose,centeredroughlyonSunnyvale.ThetermThetermSiliconValleywascoinedbyjournalistDonC.Hoeflerin1971.Siliconreferstothehighconcentrationofsemiconductorandcomputer-relatedindustriesinthearea;ValleyreferstotheSantaClaraValley.Thetermmayalsobeappliedtosurroundingareas
4、onbothsidesofSanFranciscoBayintowhichmanyoftheseindustrieshaveexpanded.Formanyyearsinthe1970sand1980sitwasalsoincorrectlycalledSiliconeValley,mostlybyjournalists,beforethenamebecamecommonplaceinAmericanculture.HistoryThelocationofthehightechindustryinthevalleywasduelargelytotwomen,Wi
5、lliamShockleyandFrederickTerman.Terman,aprofessoratStanfordUniversity,decidedthatavastareaofunusedStanfordlandwasperfectforreal-estatedevelopment,andsetupaprogramtoencouragestudentstostayintheareabyfindingthemventurecapital.Oneofthemajorsuccessstoriesoftheprogramwasthatitconvincedtwo
6、studentstostayinthearea,WilliamHewlettandDavidPackard.Hewlett-Packardwouldgoontobeoneofthefirst"hightech"firmsintheareathatwerenotdirectlyrelatedtoNASAortheUSNavy.In1951theprogramwasagainexpandedwiththecreationoftheStanfordIndustrialPark,aseriesofsmallindustrialbuildingsthatwererente
