5、inaccordancewiththepriorities.Insuchsituations,externalmemoryapplicationsareexpectedtoperformaswellaspossibleforthecurrentmemoryallocation.Thecomputationmustbereorganizedtoadapttothesequenceofmemoryallocationsinanonlinemanner.Inthispaperwepresentasimpleandnaturaldyn

6、amicmemoryalloca-tionmodel.Wede nememory-adaptiveexternalmemoryalgorithmsandspecifywhatisneededforthemtobedynamicallyoptimal.Usingnoveltechniques,wedesignandanalyzedynamicallyoptimalmemory-adaptivealgorithmsfortheproblemsofsorting,permuting,FFT,permutationnet-works,

7、(standard)matrixmultiplicationandLUdecomposition.Wealsopresentadynamicallyoptimal(inanamortizedsense)memory-adaptiveversionofthebu ertree,agenericexternalmemorydatastructureforalargenumberofbatcheddynamicapplications.Weshowthatapreviouslydevisedapproachtomemory-adap
