2、sciplinesexploringboth,researchwhichlinksthetwo,particularlyinaneducationalcontext,remainsrelativelysparse.ThisspecialissueofSchoolLeadershipandManagementisacontributiontoextendingunderstandingofhowthetwoconceptsmightbelinkedintheoryandinpracticeandwhythismatters.Diversityinpublicdiscourseis
3、oftentakentobesynonymouswithissuesofethnicityorrace.Others,includingourselves,seeitassignifyingtheissuesthatariseinrelationtoamuchwiderrangeofhumancharacteristics.Morespecifically,althoughinastrictsensediversitymayindicatemerelyawiderangeofdifferenceswithinanypopulation,itistheimpactofthosed
4、ifferenceswhicharethecentralpointofinterest.Itisnotbeingmaleorfemaleorofaparticularethnicgrouporreligionwhichmatters;itistheresponsefromothersandwhetherthatadvantagesordisadvantagesthatisattheheartofthedebate.Therearemultipletheoreticalapproaches.Inassemblingarticles,oneofthekeydecisionswasc
5、hoicesrelativetodifferentaxiologicalandepistemologicalpositions.Writingaboutdiversityiswritingaboutpower.Choicesaboutwhattoincludeinevitably,therefore,signalvaluepositions.Forexample,thepresenceorabsenceofresearchwhichfocusesonthesinglecharacteristicarguablymostlikelytodisadvantage,suchaseth
6、nicityorrace,orthatwhichadoptsanintersectionalityapproach,recognisingthecomplexityofmultiplecharacteristicsincontextandinsynergy,maybesupportedordeplored,dependingonthepoliticalpositionofthereader.Inorderfortheissuetoreflectsuchcurrentdebatesandtheunderpinningwiderangeofvalues,wehaveincluded
