3、ernIllinoisUniversity(SIU)andanindustrialfacilityinIndiaarereportedinarecentpaperpreparedbyS.KavidassandMikhailMaryamchikofBabcock&Wilcox(Barberton,Ohio),C.PriceofSIU(Carbondale,Illinois),andA.MandalofKanoriaChemicals&IndustriesLtd.(Renukoot,India).Thepaper,entitle
4、d“B&W’sIR-CFBCoal-FiredBoilerOperatingExperiences,”waspresentedattheFifteenthAnnualInternationalPittsburghCoalConference,heldSeptember14–18,1998inPittsburgh,Pennsylvania.IR-CFBBoilerDesignInafluidized-bedboiler,crushedcoalisintroducedintoafurnacecontainingabedofeit
5、heraninertmaterial(likesandorcrushedlimestone)ordolomite.Pressurizedair,fedintothebottomofthefurnace,blowsupwardthroughthebedandcausesthecoalandbedmaterialsto“fluidize”inahighlyturbulent,suspendedstate.Figure1profilesatypicalIR-CFBfurnace,demonstratingthechangeinbe
6、ddensitywithincreasingheight.Theturbulenceofthefluidized-bedsystemallowsprolongedcontactbetweentheairandtheparticlesofcoal,resultinginmorecompletecombustionatalowertemperaturethanoldersystems(whichreducesnitrogenoxides).Ifsorbentmaterialsuchaslimestoneisusedasbedma
7、terial,emissionsofsulfurdioxidearelikewisereducedduetoconversiontocalciumsulfate.Further,becausecombustionoccursatalowertemperature,theprocessisrelativelyinsensitivetothetypeoffuelburned.Thisallowstheuseofalternativefuelssuchascoalwaste,biomassfuels,petroleumcoke,a
8、ndotherlowerBritishthermalunit(Btu)material.Acirculatingfluidizedbedcapturesthesolidscarriedoutofthefurnaceandreturnsthemtotheprimarycombustionch
