3、dinmost.”Still,herdepartmentheadinsistedonit,soKailwentforwardwiththeattitude,“I’lldoit,butIwon’tlikeit.”Shewassureherstudentswouldn’tlikeit,either.Kailwasinforasurprise—asisanyonewhotakesalookataraftofrecentstudiessupportingtheeffectivenessof“oldschool”methods
4、likememorizingmathfacts,readingaloud,practicinghandwritingandteachingargumentation(activitiesthatoncewentbythenamesdrill,recitation,penmanshipandrhetoric).Whiletheeducationworldisallabuzzaboutso-called21stcenturyskillslikecollaboration,problemsolvingandcritical
5、thinking,thisresearchsuggeststhatwemightdowelltoaddastrongdoseofthe19thcenturytoourchildren’sschooling.Kail’sexperienceisinstructive.AssoonasshebeganteachingherstudentstheGreekandLatinoriginsofmanyEnglishterms—thattherootstameans“putinplaceorstand,”forexample,a
6、ndthatcessmeans“tomoveorwithdraw”—theyeagerlybeganidentifyingfamiliarwordsthatincorporatedtheroots,likestatueandrecess.Herthreeclassescompetedagainstoneanothertocomeupwiththelongestlistofwordsderivedfromtherootstheywerelearning.Kail’sstudentsstartedusingthesete
