3、thoughoverself--centeredcanbringnegativeeffect,fromthewholehistoricalpointofview,thereisnobigsocialeventswhichviolatethestablesituation,thisisbecausetheconceptofcommitmenthasbeenintheheartofAmericansforalongtime.Individualismsuppliedthenationwitharationalizationo
4、fitscharacteristicattitudes,behaviorpatternsandaspirations.Itendowedthepast,thepresentandthefuturewiththeperspectiveofunityandprogress.Itexplainedthepeculiarsocialandpoliticalorganizationofthenation—unityinspiteofheterogeneityanditpointedtowardanidealsocialorgani
5、zationinharmonywithAmericanexperience.Aboveall,individualismexpressedastheuniversalismandidealismmostcharacteristicofthenationalconsciousness.Thisconceptevolvedincontradistinctiontosocialism,theuniversalandmessianiccharacterofwhichitshared.Individualism,theloveof
