4、dents’communicativecompetence,whichincludesboththeknowledgeaboutthelanguageandtheknowledgeabouthowtousethelanguageappropriately.Grammarrulesareoneaspectofcommunicativecompetence.Infact,languageteachersandlearnersareoftenfrustratedbythedisconnectbetweenknowingtherulesandb
5、eingabletoapplythoserulesautomaticallyinlanguageskills.Thisdisconnectreflectsaseparationbetweendeclarativeknowledgeandproceduralknowledge.Declarativeknowledgeandproceduralknowledgeisandistinctionbetween“knowledgeabout”and“knowledgehowto”.Declarativeknowledgeenablesastude
6、nttodescribearuleofgrammarandapplyitinpatternpracticedrillswhileproceduralknowledgeenablesastudenttoapplyaruleofgrammarincommunication.Proceduralknowledgedoesnotconvertautomaticallyintodeclarativeknowledge.Anderson’s(1982)conception,atomizationistheprocessofconvertingthe
