2、ot,whataretheconditionsthatinfluencethealternation.Thedataarefrom12collegegraduates,whoareaskedtoreadawordlistaswellasashortstorycontainingtargetsounds.Resultsshowthatthealternationisnotrandom.Themorefrequentdirectionis[l]changinginto[n],andsoundsontherightchangingintoth

4、phoneticfeaturesthatspeakersfromdifferentplaceshave.Notonlycanpeople’sfirstlanguagebeevidenceoftheirhometown,theirsecondlanguagecanalsogiveaclue.OneintriguingobservationisthatnativeSichuandialectspeakerstendtohavedistinctivewaysofarticulating[l]and[n]whenspeakingEnglish.
5、Todate,fewliteratureisavailabletoaccountfortherulesunderlyingthealternation. Asforwhether[l]and[n]areinterchangeableinSichuandialect,theopinionsvary.Somescholarssuggestthat[n]inSichuandialectfunctionsas[n]and[l]inStandardMandarin(Wang1994,Zhou2001),andWang(1994)statesth
6、at[n]inSichuandialectisdifferentfromthenasalconsonant[n]inStandardMandarin.Instead,itisanasalized[l],namely,[l?].However,Ma&Tan(1998)pointsoutthat[l]and[n]bothexistsinSichuandialect,andtheyareinfreevariation.Besides,oneoftheparticipantsinterviewed,whoisanativespeakerofSi
7、chuandialect,maintainsthat[l]and[n]aretwodistinctconsonantsthatarenotinterchangeable. InspiredbyHung(2000),whofindsthat[l]and[n]alternationinHongKongEnglishisnotrandom,thepresentstudyaddressesthefollowingquestions: 1.Isalternationof[l]and[n]inEnglishamongSichuanspeaker
