3、dandtreated.AdiagnosisofATFPisusuallyaprocessofelimination.Whenapatientcomplainsofconstantfacialpainrestrictedtoonesideoftheface,thephysicianmustfirstruleoutanyotherconditions.Testsincluderoentgenogramsoftheskull,MRIand/orCTscanwithparticularattentionto
4、theskullbase,carefuldentalandotolaryngolgicevaluation,andthoroughneurologicalexamination.OnlyaftertestsruleoutotherfactorscanadiagnosisofATFPbemade.TREATMENTSTreatmentofATFPcanbedifficultandperplexingforbothdoctorandpatient.Medicationisusuallythefirstco
5、urseoftreatment.SurgicalproceduressuchasmicrovasculardecompressiongenerallyarenotsuccessfulwithATFPpatients.Thefollowingdrugsareusedtotreatatypicalfacialpain:Amitriptyline.(Triptyl,Elavil)Gabapentin.(Neurontin).PamelorCapsaicinOtherpainreliefstrategiesi
6、nclude:HotandcoldcompressesAcupunctureAtypicalodontalgiaAtypicalodontalgiadescribesatypicalfacialpaininapparentlynormalteeth.Unfortunately,dentistsusuallyconsiderthisdiagnosisonlyafterthefailureofinvasivetreatment.Atypicalodontalgiapatientsaretypifiedby
7、womenintheirmid-40swhocomplainofpersistentpaininoneormorepremolarormolarteeth.Theyassociatepainwithdentalproceduresortraumatotheregion,Whilethecauseofatypicalodontalgiaisuncertain.Patientswithunrelentingpainintheteeth,gingival,palataloralveolartissuesof
8、tenseemultipledentistsandhavemultipleirreversibleproceduresperformedandstillhavetheirpain.Uptoone-thirdofpatientsattendingachronicfacialpainclinichaveundergonepriorirreversibledentalproceduresfortheirpainwithoutsuccess.Inthesecas
