3、yLinguistsandlanguageteachersbegantocooperatetoresearchamethodologyforforeignlanguageteachingthatwouldbebasedonascientificstudyoflanguageandastudyofhowpeoplelearned.InBritainintheReformMovement,linguistsemphasizedthestudyofphoneticsandinthe1880sdesignedtheInternationalPhoneticAlphabet(IPA).Thatmea
4、ntthat,forthefirsttime,thesoundsofalllanguagescouldbesystematicallycompared.InFranceandGermanyduringthesameperiod,TheDirectMethod,wasdeveloped.Bytheearly20thcenturytheDirectMethodhadbeenofficiallyadoptedinFrenchandGermanschools.WhentheUSAenteredtheSecondWorldWaritsuddenlybecameclearthatoralskillsi
5、nforeignlanguageswerenecessary.TheauthoritiesturnedtotheStructuralLinguiststoseekforascientificdescriptionoflanguageandtotheBehavioristPsychologistsforascientificdescriptionoflearning.TheresultoftheircooperationbecameknownastheAudio-lingualMethod.Inthe1950sand1960s,theOralandSituationalMethodspara
6、llelingtheAudio-lingualMethod,developedinBritainasaresultofdecadesofworkbyBritishlinguists.Inthe1970sand1980s,developedfromthesemethods,cametheCommunicativeApproachoflanguageteaching.Thisapproachrecognizesthatlearnersneedtoknowthegrammaticalrulesofthelanguage,butstressesthatthepurposeoflearningsuc
