3、eratetoresearchamethodologyforforeignlanguageteachingthatwouldbebasedonascientificstudyoflanguageandastudyofhowpeoplelearned.InBritainintheReformMovement,linguistsemphasizedthestudyofphoneticsandinthe1880sdesignedtheInternationalPhoneticAlphabet(IPA).Thatmeantthat,forthefirsttime,thesoundsofalllang
4、uagescouldbesystematicallycompared.InFranceandGermanyduringthesameperiod,TheDirectMethod,wasdeveloped.Bytheearly20thcenturytheDirectMethodhadbeenofficiallyadoptedinFrenchandGermanschools.WhentheUSAenteredtheSecondWorldWaritsuddenlybecameclearthatoralskillsinforeignlanguageswerenecessary.Theauthorit
5、iesturnedtotheStructuralLinguiststoseekforascientificdescriptionoflanguageandtotheBehavioristPsychologistsforascientificdescriptionoflearning.TheresultoftheircooperationbecameknownastheAudio-lingualMethod.Inthe1950sand1960s,theOralandSituationalMethodsparallelingtheAudio-lingualMethod,developedinBr
6、itainasaresultofdecadesofworkbyBritishlinguists.Inthe1970sand1980s,developedfromthesemethods,cametheCommunicativeApproachoflanguageteaching.Thisapproachrecognizesthatlearnersneedtoknowthegrammaticalrulesofthelanguage,butstressesthatthepurposeoflearningsuchrulesistobeabletodothings,toperformfunction
