2、jorcontributortochildhoodmortalityparticularlyindevelopingcountries.Evaluationofneonatalmortalitypatternisanessentialstepintheefforttocurbitsincidence.Wetherefore,setouttodeterminetheneonatalmortalitypatternanditsassociatedfactorsinatertiaryhospitalinsout

3、hernNigeria.Methods:ThisisaretrospectivestudyofneonatalmortalityinatertiaryhospitalfromAugust2004toJuly2007(a3yearperiod).Dataobtainedincludetotallivebirths,neonataldeaths,relevantinformationonpregnancy,labouranddelivery,neonatalmorbidityanddurationoflife

4、.Results:Therewereatotalof3,051livebirthsand44neonataldeathswithaneonatalmortalityrateof14.4/1000livebirths.Earlyneonatalmortalityconstituted81.8%ofoverallneonatalmortalitywiththemajorcausesbeingprematurity40%severebirthasphyxia1529.5%andneonatalsepsis18.

5、3%.Lowbirthweightbabies(<2500grams)constituted55.5%oftotalneonatalmortality.Conclusion:EarlyneonatalmortalityconstitutesanoverwhelmingproportionofneonatalmortalityinSouthernNigeria.Thiscanbesignificantlycurtailedbyreducingtheincidenceanddeathfrompremat

7、nd2015[1].Bytheyear2000,theproportionofchilddeathsthatoccurredintheneonatalperiodworldwidewas38%[2-5]mostofwhichunfortunatelyoccurredinlowandmiddleincomecountries.Oftheestimatednearly4millionneonataldeaththatoccurredgloballyintheyear2000,onlyabout1%occurr

8、edindevelopedcountrieswhereneonatalmortalityrateislessthan4per15thousandlivebirths,while99%tookplaceinthedevelopingcountrieswithaverageglobalneonatalmortalityratemorethan33perthousandlivebirth[6,7].¡¡¡¡ToachieveMDG.
